Grassroots, established in 1968, has been a fixture in the South Pasadena Community for 40 years. In 1986 Marla, Meir and Baby Raechel (2 ½ months old) purchased the store and soon made it their own.
With Meir having worked in the hospitality industry and Marla as a registered nurse, they stood at the entrance of their new store and wondered “what did we get ourselves into?”
In the early days, Grassroots (1500 square feet total) offered soups, sandwiches, salads, frozen yogurt and their "Famous Apple Walnut Muffins" in the restaurant. The Vitamin and Grocery Departments were small but quite ample and well suited for the health conscious. “Learning about the needs of the customer was a challenge” Marla said, “but our lives were definitely enhanced by the experience.”
Now, almost 22 years later, 2 more children and 3 remodels, Grassroots has doubled in size. The restaurant now a full service eatery complete with their new Grab & Go fridges, feeds a large crowd daily.
Vitamins and other supplements have evolved into the main attraction here at “The Roots.” To Meir’s disbelief, Susan, who joined our staff in 1999, has elevated the quality of the department to heights unimagined! As the supplement buyer and self proclaimed “know it all”, Susan can be found chatting in the aisles with customers, about the latest research on most health issues.
“The Grocery Department” as described by Marla “has always been complex.” Over the years as more health concerns have come into focus, our grocery department has evolved in order to keep pace with the current needs of our customers. With the demands of parents of autistic children, those who suffer from Celiac Disease and individuals who prefer this lifestyle, the conventional grocery section diminished while the Gluten Free became enhanced.
We hope that when you are next in or around the Los Angeles area you will make time to visit our store. Come in and enjoy the experience of pleasant, courteous service, quality supplements and wonderful food.
